Just in time for pre-Songs of the Past DLC refreshers, Witcher 3 modders have restored a cut menu which lets you watch story recaps at any time

Rock Paper Shotgun · 2 hours ago

Modders working on The Witcher 3 have restored a menu that CD Projekt Red left unfinished in the game's files since its 2015 launch, allowing players to rewatch the "last time on The Witcher 3" story recap videos at any point rather than only when they load a save or fast travel. The restoration, released by modder Glassfish777 and dubbed "Storybook", offers a handy way for players to refresh their memory of the RPG's plot ahead of the upcoming Songs of the Past expansion, without needing to replay the whole game.

The recap menu sits in the glossary section of the main menu, labelled "Events" in-game, alongside the existing character biography section. It was first uncovered in the game's files back in 2022 by a modder known as Fabian, whose attempt to restore it stalled due to a serious bug, but the 2024 release of RedKit's UI flash sources made it possible for Glassfish777 to finish the job, adding features such as skipping, subtitles and automatic music fadeout. The menu contains CD Projekt Red's own titled, localised recap clips covering major story beats, and an optional file is also available for players who want the recaps to stop appearing on loading screens.

  • Modders restored a cut Witcher 3 menu for on-demand story recaps.
  • The unfinished feature dated back to the game's 2015 launch.
  • It arrives ahead of the Songs of the Past expansion next year.
