JustWatch expands streaming guide into free and paid film service

Ars Technica ·

JustWatch, known for helping viewers find where films are streaming, has launched JustWatch TV, a service offering free films with adverts, rentals and an ad-free subscription. The move extends its guide into hosting films itself, while also supporting the group’s advertising business with more audience data.

The service has a few hundred titles across its tiers, including films such as *Green Room*, *Locke* and *Sing Sing*, and works without an account for free viewing. It has 30 content partners, including Paramount and New Regency; the ad-free option costs $4 a month or a limited-time $50 for life. JustWatch says its guide has 50 million customers and aims for JustWatch TV to reach 100 million monthly users in the coming years.

JustWatch is best known as a guide that helps people find which streaming services carry a particular film or television programme. It operates in a crowded market where viewers choose between paid subscriptions, rentals and services that show adverts.

JustWatch TV adds films that people can watch through JustWatch itself, either free with adverts, by renting, or through an ad-free subscription. The titles come from film companies and other content partners, which supply films for distribution.

The change matters because JustWatch is moving from directing viewers to other services to offering viewing options of its own. Its larger audience could also help it gather information about viewing habits, which can support its advertising business.
