Kalvin Phillips has returned to Sheffield United on a season-long loan from Manchester City for the 2026-27 Championship campaign, a deal confirmed in mid-August 2026. It is a repeat move: the 30-year-old midfielder already spent the second half of last season on loan at Bramall Lane, and manager Chris Wilder has moved quickly to bring him back, praising his character both on and off the pitch. The transfer matters chiefly because of persistent doubts over Phillips's fitness, which have overshadowed his career since a £42m move from Leeds United to City in 2022.

Phillips has managed just 32 appearances for City, with only 6 starts, and has not featured in the Premier League for them since November 2023. His previous stint at Sheffield United was cut short after only three matches when he suffered a red card and a season-ending injury in the Sheffield derby, and he has also spoken of struggling physically following loan spells elsewhere, including a lengthy injury lay-off after time at Ipswich Town. Despite this history, Phillips said he would "rather go to Sheffield United than anywhere else" and wants to "play as many games as possible" as the club, who finished 13th last season, target promotion from the Championship.
