A registered sex offender in Winfield, Kansas, allegedly shot dead his partner and their four young children before turning the gun on himself, in a killing that came just weeks after police had dealt with him over "erratic behaviour". Ronald H. Williams Sr, 53, is accused of killing Kelly L. George, 44, and their children aged three to nine, before phoning 911 on Tuesday morning to say he had killed his family and intended to take his own life. The case has drawn attention because Williams had a decades-long criminal record, including a sex offence requiring registration, and had had recent contact with police, raising questions about whether warning signs were missed.

Officers responding to a nearby traffic incident reached the house within minutes and heard a single gunshot as the first officer approached, prompting a roughly two-hour standoff before they breached the property and found all six family members dead from gunshot wounds. Police Chief Robbie DeLong said Williams had been in contact with officers over aggressive public behaviour and reports of gunfire in recent weeks, though nothing indicated he was about to harm his family. Court records show Williams faced charges spanning nearly 30 years, including drugs, battery, assault on an officer, burglary, attempted rape and kidnapping, across several Kansas counties, while neighbours described shock and heartbreak on learning children were among the victims.
