Kathie Hoops, Longtime Financial Executive at Paramount, Dies at 66

The Hollywood Reporter ·

Kathie Hoops, a longtime Paramount Pictures financial executive, has died aged 66 after cancer. Her death marks the loss of a specialist who oversaw residual payments—an important part of how film industry performers and other rights-holders are paid—and advised the studio during collective bargaining negotiations.

Hoops died on 31 July in Woodland Hills. She worked for Paramount and its parent company for almost 40 years, becoming vice-president of residuals in 1994 and remaining in the role until companywide downsizing led to her departure in April 2024; she also helped introduce new residual-payment software and mentored colleagues.

Film and television performers, writers and other rights-holders can receive residuals: payments made when work is reused, such as in television reruns or on streaming services. The rules vary by agreement and help determine how people are paid after a film or programme is first released.

Studios such as Paramount negotiate those rules with unions representing workers, including during collective bargaining. Financial specialists who manage residuals help studios calculate and distribute payments, and their work can affect both workers’ income and the cost of using older productions.
