Kathleen Hanna and Ad-Rock have released a cover of Justin Bieber and DJ Snake’s “Let Me Love You” as the first single from Contra-ICE Vol. 1: ICE OUT, a benefit compilation due on 2 October. The project aims to support frontline organisations, amplify immigrant voices and challenge the treatment of immigrants by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Curated by Build Art Make Change founder Dali Colorado, the album will feature more than 30 artists, including Tom Morello, Jello Biafra and Fred Armisen. Produced by Mario Caldato Jr., Hanna and Ad-Rock’s version adds live instrumentation and contributions from Money Mark, Fredo Ortiz and Frank Figueroa, with Hanna’s vocals giving the 2016 hit a more politically charged interpretation.

Kathleen Hanna is a US singer and feminist activist best known for fronting the punk bands Bikini Kill and Le Tigre. Ad-Rock, whose real name is Adam Horovitz, is a member of the hip-hop group Beastie Boys; both have long been associated with politically engaged music.
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, usually called ICE, is the federal agency responsible for enforcing immigration law inside the United States. It has been a focus of debate over detention, deportation and the treatment of people without legal immigration status.
Benefit compilations bring together musicians to raise money or attention for a cause. The proceeds and publicity from this project are intended to support groups working with immigrants and to give immigrant artists and communities a larger platform.
