Katy Perry has criticised the White House for using her song “Firework” in a TikTok video featuring footage of US missile strikes on Iranian port targets. She said she had neither approved nor been asked about the use, and argued that pairing the song with violence contradicted its intended message of hope, healing and self-worth.

The nine-second video, posted two days earlier, used the lyric “Boom, boom, boom / Even brighter than the moon” over what it described as unclassified strike footage, with the caption “Iran has been warned”. Perry joins Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter among artists who have objected to the White House’s use of their music; the account had also recently used the White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” in a military-themed post.
