Keeper Owono ‘would never intentionally hurt anyone’
FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono has spoken of his grief following the death of Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who suffered a serious injury in a collision with him during a Spanish second division match. Owono said he was struggling to come to terms with the loss and was thinking of De Miguel and his family; his team-mate Lautaro Spatz said Owono would never intentionally hurt anyone.
The collision happened late in a 2-2 match on Monday, when Owono ran to clear a long ball and his knee appeared to hit De Miguel. The 30-year-old was taken to hospital and later died; the match was abandoned after Owono was sent off. Spanish police have opened a routine inquiry, while Tenerife has begun six days of mourning and postponed matches for both clubs this weekend.

Explained simply
FC Andorra and Tenerife play in Spain’s second division, a professional football league below La Liga. Jesús Owono is Andorra’s goalkeeper, while Jesús de Miguel played as a striker for Tenerife.
In football, goalkeepers often leave their goal to challenge for long passes, bringing them into contact with opposing players. A collision can lead to a serious injury, and police inquiries may establish how an incident happened; an inquiry does not by itself imply that anyone acted deliberately.
The death has affected both clubs and led Tenerife to postpone matches and observe a period of mourning. It has also drawn attention to the risks of on-field collisions and the impact they can have on players, families and teammates.
