Kevin Bacon & Kyra Sedgwick’s SXSW Horror Pic ‘Family Movie’ Sets Spring 2027 Release With Variance

Deadline · 1 hour ago

Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick will bring their meta-horror film 'Family Movie' to North American theatres on 23 April 2027 through Variance Films, following its successful premiere at SXSW earlier this year. The film, which earned 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, stars and was directed by the couple alongside their children Travis and Sosie, who also produced. The ensemble cast includes Liza Koshy, John Carroll Lynch, and Scoot McNairy; the plot centres on a film production that descends into genuine horror when a corpse appears on the set of the fictional horror film being made.

Rather than pursuing conventional distribution channels, the Bacons decided to release theatrically after witnessing enthusiastic audience responses at international film festivals. They emphasised their belief that the film warrants a theatrical experience and expressed confidence in the independent cinema landscape. Gersh and CAA will handle downstream rights distribution for future platforms, whilst Neon International manages foreign sales.
