An 80-year-old retired miner and former soldier in South Yorkshire became the victim of a violent home invasion in October 2015, suffering severe injuries including a fractured skull, broken ribs, and a broken jaw during a robbery. The assailant stole a safe containing Tommy Ward's entire £30,000 life savings. Ward never recovered sufficiently to identify his attacker and died from his injuries five months later.

The crime remains unsolved more than a decade later, despite a £10,000 Crimewatch appeal and multiple arrests over the years. Police have released numerous suspects without bringing charges against anyone, including a woman arrested in August 2024. Investigators have consistently stated that someone in the local community likely knows the perpetrator's identity, yet the case continues to stall and the killer has evaded justice.
