King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard announced on Wednesday 8 July that their 28th studio album, Alien Metal, will arrive later this summer via the band's own p(doom) Records. The prolific Australian group described the record as a hard electronic project, marking a further shift into dance genres following their more ambient and acid house-oriented 2023 album The Silver Cord. The announcement arrived alongside the lead single "Level 5", a spacey, jungle-influenced track whose video was directed by Hayden Somerville and features a cameo from actor Vince Colosimo.
The album was years in the making, with the band scrapping large amounts of material — "entire albums, entire universes", according to member Stu Mackenzie — before it came together during a late-night jam session of over an hour, from which every track reportedly evolved. Musically, Alien Metal ventures into darker, heavier territory spanning techno, hardcore, ravey house and jungle, while member Joey Walker said it still "feels like us". The eight-track record accompanies a run of live dates, including three nights at New York's Forest Hills Stadium (20–22 August), a Brooklyn "rave show" on 23 August, and the sold-out second edition of the band's Field of Vision festival in Buena Vista, Colorado (14–16 August).
