Kingdom Hearts 4’s first new world is inspired by Pixar’s Coco

Disney has confirmed that Kingdom Hearts 4 will include a new world inspired by Pixar’s Coco, revealed during its D23 Entertainment Showcase. The announcement is significant because it provides the game’s largest gameplay reveal since its 2022 announcement, alongside a newly stated release window and confirmation of a Kingdom Hearts anime series.
The trailer begins in Coco’s Land of the Dead, where Sora, wearing Día de los Muertos-style skull face paint, joins Miguel and Héctor against Heartless enemies and receives a Coco-themed Keyblade. Donald and Goofy are shown separately searching for Sora in the Underworld and Quadratum, the game’s realistic Tokyo-inspired hub city; Square Enix had previously shared little beyond teasers and comments from director Tetsuya Nomura.

Kingdom Hearts is a series of action role-playing games made by Square Enix in partnership with Disney. Its main character, Sora, travels between worlds based on Disney films with his companions Donald Duck and Goofy, fighting creatures known as the Heartless with a weapon called a Keyblade.
Coco is a Pixar film set around Mexico’s Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, and follows a boy called Miguel who enters the Land of the Dead. Its characters and setting are therefore being adapted as one of the places Sora can visit in the new game.
Kingdom Hearts 4 was announced in 2022 and is the next main instalment in the long-running series. It is expected to continue Sora’s story after he became separated from Donald and Goofy, including in a new city called Quadratum.
