Newcastle jazz group Knats have reacted with surprise to their Mercury Prize nomination, describing it as “absolutely mental”. The recognition places the group among the year’s shortlisted British and Irish artists and could significantly broaden its audience.

Knats were nominated for their self-titled debut album, which combines jazz with hip-hop, soul and electronic influences. The Mercury Prize annually recognises outstanding albums by British or Irish artists, with 12 records typically making the shortlist.
