Knytt, one of 2006’s most charming indie platformers, has a surprise Steam re-release – and it’s still free

Rock Paper Shotgun · 2 hours ago

Knytt, a beloved 2006 freeware indie platformer by solo developer Nifflas, has been given an official re-release on Steam under the name Knytt Classic. The remake is a "pixel-perfect port" built by Wolfhound developer Bit Kid with Nifflas' blessing, bringing the tranquil, exploration-focused platformer to modern hardware while remaining completely free to play. The re-release matters because it preserves a quietly influential piece of indie game history, letting a new generation experience a title often cited as blurring the line between platformer and walking simulator.

Knytt Classic largely retains the original's simple controls, ambient synth soundtrack and Metroidvania-style sense of exploration across its blocky, alien 2D landscapes. New additions aimed at returning players include speedrun time tracking, three new difficulty modes—one of which, Knytt XH, was designed by Baba Is You creator Arvi "Hempuli" Teikari—plus controller support, Steam Deck compatibility, achievements and hidden bonuses. Valve has yet to award it an official Deck verification badge, though early hands-on impressions suggest it runs well.

  • Knytt Classic, a remake of the 2006 indie hit, is out on Steam.
  • It's free, built by Bit Kid with original creator Nifflas' approval.
  • Adds speedrun timers, three new difficulty modes and Steam Deck support.
