Kuwaiti man convicted of Taunton rape faces Austrian extradition over terrorism suspicions
Ayman Al-Shammari, a 28-year-old Kuwaiti man, was found guilty of raping a woman he met in Taunton after she told him to stop during sex at her home. The case matters because he is also facing extradition proceedings over suspected terrorism offences in Austria.
The jury at Bristol Crown Court reached a 10–2 majority verdict on one count of rape. Jurors heard recordings in which the woman said she did not want to continue and was in pain; Al-Shammari denied rape, saying he would not have sex without consent. He has no previous convictions and was remanded in custody ahead of sentencing on 27 November.
In short
- Al-Shammari was convicted of rape by a 10–2 majority verdict.
- The court heard recordings of the woman asking him to stop.
- Austria is seeking his extradition over suspected terrorism offences.
