Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi’s Spanish film *La Bola Negra* won the Toronto International Film Festival’s People’s Choice Award, with *I Play Rocky* and *Being Heumann* as runners-up. The audience award is considered a potential indicator of Oscar success, making the win significant as *La Bola Negra* represents Spain in the International Feature Film race and is expected to compete in other Academy Award categories.

The film follows three generations of men whose lives are linked by desire, suffering and love, and will be released in cinemas by Netflix on 16 October. Other winners included *Elsinore* for International People’s Choice, *Darlene Love: I Know Where I’ve Been* for Documentary, and *Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney* for Midnight Madness. India’s *Angh* won the $20,000 Platform Prize and is automatically eligible for the International Feature Film Oscar.
