La Mesías, a Spanish TV hit from 2023, has finally arrived on the streamer Mubi, and the Guardian's review calls it wildly ambitious, blackly funny and unforgettable. Created by Los Javis, the acclaimed Spanish directing duo who won best director at this year's Cannes film festival, the seven-episode series follows estranged siblings Enric and Irene as they discover their younger siblings have become a viral Christian pop band, unravelling a dark family history of emotional neglect, religious fanaticism and even UFOs along the way.

The show spans three timelines, moving between the siblings' traumatic childhood, their sheltered adolescence under a domineering, religiously fanatical mother, and their present-day attempt to save their sisters, with different actors playing each stage of life. Episodes run close to 80 minutes and the series draws comparisons to Almodóvar in its portrayal of a monstrous, chaotic mother figure, played across different ages by Ana Rujas, Lola Dueñas and Carmen Machi. While the reviewer flags flaws, including too many plotlines and some on-the-nose music choices, the series is praised overall as a bold, singular achievement, inspired partly by the real-life group Flos Mariae.
