Labor MP Ed Husic has spoken publicly for the first time about the severity of a road crash last month, describing himself as "very lucky" to have survived after a truck lost control and slammed into his stationary vehicle on the M7 motorway. The Member for Chifley suffered a concussion and a fractured back, and said dashcam footage showed he had no warning before the truck fishtailed into the back of his car as he waited at an off-ramp.

Husic said the concussion left him with no memory of events between midday and when he regained consciousness in hospital, forcing him to re-arrange meetings with people he could not recall speaking to on the day. He praised staff at Westmead Hospital and his physiotherapist in Mount Druitt for aiding his recovery, noting the concussion effects have subsided but his hairline back fracture will take a further eight weeks to heal. He only grasped the crash's severity after later seeing the extent of the damage to his car at a smash repair shop.
