Jim Ratcliffe, billionaire co-owner of Manchester United and founder of chemicals company Ineos, claimed in a recent BBC interview that the UK is "on the slide" and attributed this to high taxes and immigration. Labour politicians, including party chair Bridget Phillipson and Treasury minister Torsten Bell, have criticised these remarks, arguing that Ratcliffe lacks credibility given that he relocated to low-tax Monaco in 2020 and was a prominent supporter of Brexit. This represents a political dispute over Britain's economic competence and direction.

Ratcliffe told the BBC's Big Boss Interview podcast that Britain, once "a fantastic place", is now in decline and expressed that he has "no confidence" in the country. Phillipson countered that he forfeits the "moral high ground" by criticising the UK whilst choosing to be a tax exile, and linked Brexit—which Ratcliffe supported—to economic damage. Bell escalated the criticism, alleging Ratcliffe "hates his own country while complaining he doesn't get big enough subsidies from it" and accusing him of lamenting manufacturing losses caused by the Brexit he endorsed. The Government maintains that strong business investment and economic growth are evident, with improved EU trade relationships planned.
