Lakers’ Luka Doncic calls out NBA mentor: ‘He don’t even call’

Luka Doncic jokingly called out his longtime mentor and friend Dirk Nowitzki for not calling him, saying he expects a call and dinner soon. The exchange came before the Lakers played the Trail Blazers, with Nowitzki praising Doncic on Amazon Prime’s studio show.

The pair were franchise stars in Dallas, where Nowitzki has supported Doncic throughout his career. The Mavericks traded Doncic to the Lakers in February 2025, and the 27-year-old now leads a Los Angeles side that has started the 2026-27 season among the Western Conference’s top teams. Nowitzki laughed at Doncic’s comments when asked about them during the halftime show.
