Spain claimed World Cup victory at the New York New Jersey Stadium by defeating Argentina after extra time in a match that showcased the emergence of 19-year-old Lamine Yamal as an elite international talent. The contest represented a generational moment, with the aging Lionel Messi potentially making his final World Cup appearance whilst Yamal delivered a composed performance that was instrumental in Spain's triumph.
Yamal's record now stands at 28 consecutive international matches without defeat, a remarkable achievement for a player not yet in his third year of senior football. The match highlighted contrasting tactical approaches, with Spain's technical approach proving decisive against Argentina's physical and confrontational methods, which ultimately failed to disrupt the Spanish side's control and execution throughout the tournament.
In short
- Spain won the 2026 World Cup in extra time against Argentina, with Ferran Torres scoring in the 106th minute
- Lamine Yamal, age 19, became the youngest player ever to win both the Euros and World Cup, maintaining a perfect 28-match unbeaten record for Spain
