In episode 6 of *Lanterns*, John Stewart returns to Nebraska after Hal Jordan is found dead, following Hal’s disgrace and imprisonment for the destruction caused while stopping the Manhunter. Hal’s poorly attended funeral introduces Carol Ferris, who hints at a past relationship with him and represents another important part of his troubled life.

Carol was Hal’s colleague at Ferris Aircraft before they became romantically involved, although both eventually kept major secrets from each other. In the comics, Carol is abducted by the Zamarons and transformed into Star Sapphire, gaining powers while being forced to oppose Hal; although they repeatedly reconcile, their relationship remains complicated, and the series has not yet confirmed whether Carol will adopt that identity.
