Larian Studios has released a new set of player statistics for Baldur's Gate 3, offering a light-hearted but slightly unflattering look at how millions of people have actually played the game. The figures highlight behaviour that diverges sharply from the "heroic" playthroughs many might expect, underscoring how differently players approach the game compared with its intended narrative design.

Notably, more players killed the bard companion Alfira while playing as an ordinary custom character than as the murderous "Dark Urge" origin character, despite that storyline being the one built around such violence. Larian also revealed that roughly 9,000 players completed the entire game using a portrait (vertical) monitor orientation, an unconventional and unsupported setup for a title never designed with that display format in mind.

  • Non-Durge players killed companion Alfira more often than Durge players
  • About 9,000 people finished the game on portrait-orientation monitors

Baldur's Gate 3 is a role-playing video game made by Belgian studio Larian Studios, released in 2023. It became one of the most successful games of recent years, letting players create their own character or choose from pre-written companions and make choices that shape how the story unfolds, including whether to act heroically or villainously.

One option is the "Dark Urge", a special character origin built around a dark, murderous backstory, in contrast to custom characters players design from scratch. Alfira is a bard companion who can be encountered and potentially killed during the game, regardless of which character type a player controls.

Larian periodically publishes statistics drawn from its huge player base, showing how people actually play compared with how the game was designed to be played. These figures are shared for interest and amusement rather than as formal research, giving both the studio and the public a lighter look at collective player behaviour.
