Last Call: Jean Smart & Hannah Einbinder To Play Their ‘Hacks’ Characters One More Time For Live FYC Event As Series Ends With No Spinoffs Planned

Deadline · 3 hours ago

Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder will reprise their "Hacks" roles as Deborah Vance and Ava one final time at a live for-your-consideration event, as HBO Max signals there will be no spinoffs following the acclaimed comedy's finale. Speculation about a potential spinoff centred on Paul W. Downs's Jimmy and Megan Stalter's Kayla had grown around the launch of the show's fifth and final season, but that talk has now died down as HBO Max chooses to keep the show's legacy tied solely to the original series.

The sold-out show, "Deborah Vance & Friends & Enemies Live!", takes place on Friday at The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, with surprise cast appearances alongside Smart and Einbinder, food and drinks beforehand, and a roughly 90-minute performance starting at 7:30pm. The event coincides with the start of Emmy Phase 2 voting and supports the show's record-breaking 24 Emmy nominations for its final season — the most ever for a comedy in a single year, surpassing the previous record of 23 held by "The Bear" and "The Studio". "Hacks" creators Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky are also moving on to new projects.
