LAST SENTINEL Hits Roadblock as Lightspeed LA Shifts Game’s Creative Direction
Lightspeed LA, the studio developing the AAA action game Last Sentinel, has announced it is shifting the title's creative and development direction after "extensive internal reviews and play-testing," a move that will result in layoffs at the studio. The decision suggests early builds of the game fell short of expectations, and it will further delay a release for the previously well-received project, though Lightspeed says it remains committed to making games and to its North American operations.
Last Sentinel is a narrative-driven, open-world action game set in a dystopian, cyborg-filled Tokyo, first unveiled at the 2023 Game Awards with a polished trailer. Lightspeed says affected staff will be treated "with compassion and respect," with support offered and internal transfers where possible; no release date has been announced. The studio previously opened a motion-capture facility in 2024 with actor Troy Baker as performance director, and unveiled a new AAA development framework at GDC 2026. The announcement coincides with layoffs at Double Fine, another studio hit by cuts the same day.
- Lightspeed LA overhauls Last Sentinel's creative direction, cutting some jobs.
