Laurie Anderson Shares Three Rules for Life with Striking Performance Art Piece

Consequence · 1 hour ago

Laurie Anderson performed at a public art installation in Brooklyn on 19 September, sharing three life rules developed with her late husband Lou Reed through striking electronic performance art. The rules—"Don't be afraid of anybody," "Get a really good bullshit detector and learn how to use it," and "Be really tender"—were accompanied by Anderson using her own body as a percussion instrument, echoing her 1986 "Drum Dance" technique. During the performance, she also addressed contemporary anger in society, urging audiences to look beneath surface-level rage to understand the broken hearts beneath.

The performance was part of Return of the Buffalo: Tatanka Owe Akupi, a two-day public art project that processed 40 life-size buffalo puppets through Lower Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn. Created by Amir Nizar Zuabi in partnership with Lenape and Lakota Tribe elders, the installation used the buffalo's recovery from near extinction as a symbol of healing and resilience. The procession featured diverse participants including musicians, dancers, poets, tribal leaders, and notable figures such as Rhiannon Giddens, Susan Sarandon, and Rosario Dawson.
