British Columbia is suing OpenAI and Sam Altman over the Tumbler Ridge school shooting, arguing that ChatGPT was used to plan the violence and that OpenAI failed to warn police. The province says the tragedy caused extensive harm and is seeking funding to rebuild the demolished secondary school, cover emergency costs and require stronger safeguards against violent conversations.

The February shooting killed eight people, including five children and an education assistant at the school, as well as the attacker’s mother and half-brother; the 18-year-old attacker later died by suicide. Around 160 people were trapped inside the school, which became a symbol of the community’s trauma and is being replaced at a new site. British Columbia is also seeking immediate access to the attacker’s ChatGPT logs, currently shared only with the RCMP, while OpenAI says it is co-operating with authorities and continuing its safety work.
