South African swimmer Chad le Clos has revealed that his apartment in Cape Town was destroyed by a fire that also killed a neighbour, just a day after he became the most decorated athlete in Commonwealth Games history. Le Clos, 34, said the blaze broke out in his Sea Point apartment block on the evening of 30 July and spread to his home, which he had lived in for more than a decade, leaving nothing to salvage.

The fire came a day after Le Clos won bronze in the men's 4x100m medley relay in Glasgow, taking his tally to 21 Commonwealth medals and overtaking Australia's Emma McKeon as the most successful athlete in the Games' history. Reports indicate a 93-year-old resident died in the fire, and Le Clos paid tribute to his "neighbour of many years", offering condolences to their family. He has launched a fundraising campaign to support other affected residents, and reflected on a remarkable career that also includes four Olympic medals and his famous 2012 Olympic 200m butterfly win over Michael Phelps.
