Lee Child Officially Reveals Plans to End Jack Reacher Stories

Collider ·

Lee Child has outlined three possible ways to end the Jack Reacher stories, though he has not announced a final decision. The possibilities range from a fatal sacrifice to an open-ended departure, or Reacher choosing to settle down, marking a potential end for a character known for constantly moving on.

Child, 71, created Reacher, whose books have sold more than 100 million copies worldwide across 31 titles. In an interview with USA Today, he described a discarded finale called *Die Lonely*, in which Reacher could save a stranger but die from his injuries. Another ending would leave him boarding a bus with his destination unknown; the third would have him consider adopting a dog and renting an apartment.

The case for

A definitive ending could give a long-running series a memorable conclusion and let Reacher’s story reach a meaningful final point. A sacrifice, an unknown destination or the possibility of settling down each offers a different kind of closure while respecting the character’s history.

The case against

Leaving Reacher’s future unresolved could better suit a character defined by movement and independence, and allow readers to imagine what comes next. A final ending may also close off a story that has remained popular across many books, especially when the author has not yet chosen which ending, if any, to use.
