Lego is launching a Pokémon “Smart Play” range on 1 August, combining traditional building sets with interactive features that let children train, feed, heal and battle Pokémon figures. The range matters because it turns imaginative Pokémon play into a connected physical toy system, with sound effects and simple game mechanics built into Lego models.

Twelve sets will be available, ranging from small Pikachu and Eevee builds to larger models including Charizard, Mewtwo, Squirtle and Bidoof. Smart Bricks placed inside Pokémon respond to nearby characters and tagged objects such as beds, food, training targets and potions; battles involve shaking and moving figures, with health points, charged attacks and a winner indicator. Prices vary, although the most elaborate set costs $120, and Lego is also offering quieter, non-battle-focused play options.
