LEGO has released a promotional advert in which Gillian Anderson reprises her role as Agent Scully for the first time since she stepped away from the character in 2018, having been unhappy with the direction of The X-Files' final season. The advert accompanies the launch of a new LEGO set based on the show, a rare full-circle moment for Anderson that she has since called one of the highlights of her career, comparing it to appearing on a Mad Magazine cover and in an episode of The Simpsons.

The set, numbered 21369 and titled The X-Files, originated as a fan design by Brent "WetWired" Waller that won LEGO Ideas' "Build Your Nostalgia – 90s Throwback!" competition, and closely follows his original concept. It costs $199.99, goes on general sale on 5th August with early access for LEGO Insiders from 1st August, and will be sold exclusively via LEGO.com and LEGO stores; it recreates Mulder's lab beneath a forest scene with a hovering UFO and includes eight minifigures (Mulder, Scully, the Cigarette Smoking Man, Walter Skinner, Mr. X, Alex Krycek, a grey alien and the Flukeman). Buyers who order online between 1st and 10th August will also receive a free "Scully's Lab" gift featuring an exclusive lab-coat version of the character.

New here? Start with this

LEGO has a long-running "Ideas" scheme where fans design and pitch their own sets, and if enough people vote for a design, LEGO can turn it into an official product. This new X-Files set began life as one such fan submission, entered into a competition themed around 1990s nostalgia.

The X-Files was a hugely popular American television series from the 1990s and early 2000s about two FBI agents, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, who investigated unexplained and supernatural cases. Gillian Anderson played Scully throughout the show's original run, and her involvement here is notable because she rarely returns to the character these days outside of the odd special appearance.

The new set recreates key locations and characters from the series, including Mulder's office and several figures from the show, and is being sold directly through LEGO's own shops and website rather than general retailers. Its release is being accompanied by a short promotional advert featuring Anderson back in character.
