Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and Dax Dasilva Board Soleil Moon Frye’s Shifty Shellshock Doc

The Hollywood Reporter ·

Soleil Moon Frye's documentary "Werewolf in the Waves," which chronicles her relationship with late Crazy Town singer Shifty Shellshock, has gained new executive producers in Leonardo DiCaprio's production company Appian Way and Emmy-winning producer Dax Dasilva. The film, shot largely by Frye on her iPhone, began as a chronicle of Crazy Town's comeback tour but evolved into a love story after she reconnected with childhood friend Seth Binzer, known as Shifty. The project took a tragic turn when Binzer relapsed on drugs and died of an accidental overdose in summer 2024, reshaping the documentary's focus.

Frye, who previously directed the Hulu documentary "Kid 90" with Appian Way, is joined as executive producer by Appian Way's Jennifer Davisson and Phillip Watson, Dasilva, and Binzer's sisters Aubrey Binzer and Mieke Binzer Dumont. Dasilva, an Emmy winner for "Wildcat" and founder of Lightspeed Commerce, said he was drawn to the film's unfiltered depiction of addiction and its message of hope. The documentary, which has already screened at several film festivals, aims to foster understanding around addiction and mental health, following Frye's other work including "The Carters: Hurts to Love You."

Soleil Moon Frye is an actor and documentary filmmaker who first became known as a child star. Seth Binzer, who performed as Shifty Shellshock, was the lead singer of Crazy Town, the rock band best known for its 2000 hit “Butterfly”. Frye and Binzer had known each other since childhood and later became a couple.

Their relationship and Binzer’s struggles with addiction became the subject of Frye’s documentary. Appian Way is Leonardo DiCaprio’s film production company, and Dax Dasilva is a producer; both have joined the project as executive producers. Their involvement connects the film with established figures in documentary and film production.

Addiction and mental health have been recurring subjects in Frye’s documentary work. The film’s personal footage places those issues within a relationship and a family’s experience, which may help viewers understand how they affect people close to someone struggling with addiction.
