Less than a year on, Microsoft tells Mico to pipe down
Microsoft is removing Mico, the animated character used in Copilot Voice, less than a year after introducing it. The move comes as Microsoft combines its consumer and work Copilot applications, and suggests the company is reconsidering how prominently it uses anthropomorphic AI assistants.
Mico will move to Learn Live, a voice-based study feature where Microsoft believes it can be more useful in tutoring and assignment guidance. Copilot Voice will continue to offer spoken responses without Mico’s visual presence; the change follows Microsoft’s earlier attempts at character-based assistants, including Clippy, Cortana and Microsoft Bob.
