LG’s new OLED breakthrough can boost display lifespans

LG Display has unveiled a new OLED manufacturing process called FLiPP (FMM-Less innovative Pixel Patterning), which it claims can produce panels that are brighter, longer-lasting and more energy-efficient than current screens. Unlike conventional RGB OLEDs, the technique avoids using a fine metal mask, a costly stencilling method that can cause sagging and alignment issues on larger panels, instead relying on photolithography and UV light to pattern pixels. This matters because it could remove some of the size and cost constraints that have limited OLED production.

LG Display says FLiPP panels are 1.6 times brighter, last 2.4 times longer and use 13% less power than those made with the traditional method, and claims the technology is free from size and resolution limits, making it suitable for everything from VR and AR headsets to ultra-large TVs. The firm plans to first apply the process to tablets and monitors before expanding to larger displays and 1-inch wearables, though no timeline has been given for when production or products will begin.

Political tensions and consumer display makers have long faced a trade-off between screen quality and durability, since OLED technology, which produces images by lighting up individual pixels rather than using a backlight, is prized for sharp contrast and colour but tends to degrade faster and cost more to produce than older LCD screens. Making these panels has traditionally relied on a technique using a fine metal mask, a delicate stencil that becomes harder to use accurately as screens get bigger, limiting how OLED can be scaled up.
