Liberty Mutual’s New Commercial Character Offers Insurance Against Ad-Avoiding Consumers
Liberty Mutual has launched a new advertising character called "Liberty Biberty", a fuzzy yellow creature designed to embody the satisfaction of securing affordable insurance. The move continues the insurer's decade-long strategy of using memorable slogans and quirky characters, such as the Limu Emu and Doug, to stand out in a crowded market where products are largely intangible and interchangeable.
The phrase "Liberty Biberty" originated in 2019, when a character called "Bad Actor" used it while auditioning for a spot in the campaign, and has since become an unofficial nickname for the company among consumers. Jenna Lebel, Liberty's chief marketing officer for the US retail market, said the firm decided to capitalise on the phrase's organic popularity rather than let it go to waste. Despite its heavy reliance on such branding, Liberty is actually outspent on advertising by rivals including State Farm, Geico, Allstate and Progressive, according to 2025 data from research firm Dowling & Partners, making distinctive characters essential for maintaining consumer awareness.
