Al Amin Khalifah Fhimah, the Libyan man acquitted over the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, has died aged 70. He stood trial alongside Abdulbasset Al Megrahi over the destruction of Pan Am Flight 103, which killed 270 people, but was found not guilty in 2001, while Megrahi was convicted of mass murder. His death, announced by Libyan Airlines, closes a chapter on one of the two men originally accused, though renewed evidence in recent years had raised the possibility he could have faced further legal action.

Fhimah and Megrahi were handed over for trial at a Scottish court sitting in the Netherlands in 1999 after years of UN sanctions on Libya, with charges first announced in 1991. Fhimah always denied involvement and was welcomed home by Colonel Gaddafi after his acquittal, while Megrahi died in 2012. In 2022 the FBI said he had been implicated again via an alleged confession from Abu Agila Mohammad Masud Kheir Al-Marimi, who denies the claims and is due to stand trial in Washington in January; prosecutors had reportedly considered a fresh case against Fhimah under Scotland's double jeopardy law had that trial resulted in conviction.
