Listen to the First Atlas Sound Song in 15 Years
Developing story first seen 1 hour ago
Bradford Cox has released “Octoberland”, the first new song in 15 years under his solo project Atlas Sound, alongside a music video he directed. The release follows a surprise return to the stage at Philadelphia’s Making Time ∞ festival, where Cox debuted an eight-song set of new material.
Cox, the frontman of Deerhunter, had not performed live since 2019, aside from an impromptu noise set in Athens, Georgia, in 2023. Atlas Sound released three albums between 2008 and 2011, with music that leaned more on sampling and wall-of-sound pop than Deerhunter’s shoegaze and krautrock.

Explained simply
Bradford Cox is an American musician best known as the frontman of Deerhunter, an indie rock band formed in Atlanta. Atlas Sound is his solo project, named after a cassette karaoke machine he used as a child.
Atlas Sound released three albums between 2008 and 2011. Its music often used samples and dense layers of sound, giving it a different feel from Deerhunter’s mix of shoegaze and krautrock.
Cox’s return to live performance is notable because he had not played a full live set since 2019. The project’s long break means new Atlas Sound music is a chance to hear how Cox’s solo work has developed.
