LIV to wind down after backers withdraw support
LIV Golf is expected to wind down after BC Partners Credit decided not to finance a proposed relaunch, known as LIV 2.0. The decision follows the withdrawal of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), leaving the league unable to secure the funding and player agreements needed to continue.
BC Partners had considered providing up to $300m (£223m), and those working on the relaunch reportedly had about 30 players signed up, including major winners. But deadlines proved difficult to meet, while prominent players including Jon Rahm, Ian Poulter, Tyrrell Hatton and Graeme McDowell had left; PIF is expected to tell a court on Thursday that the plan is not viable. PIF had spent more than $5bn (£3.7bn) on LIV since its launch in 2021, and the league’s 2026 season ended early, with its final event held on 26 August.
In short
- LIV Golf is expected to wind down.
- BC Partners declined to fund its proposed relaunch.
- PIF is expected to say LIV 2.0 is not viable.
