DreamWorks Animation’s “Forgotten Island” follows best friends Raissa and Jo, who become stranded in the mystical world of Nakali while facing the possibility of being separated when one leaves to study abroad. Liza Soberano and H.E.R., who voice the characters, said the story resonated because it explores distance, migration and the effort required to preserve close relationships.

The film draws on Filipino folklore and cultural details, including farewell parties, family gatherings, “pasalubong”, karaoke and mahjong. Soberano connected the story to leaving the Philippines for America and fearing she would grow apart from her younger sister, while H.E.R. recalled moving from California to New York at 17 and leaving her younger sister behind; both also contribute vocals to the soundtrack.
