London Irish target 2027 return after takeover

BBC Sport ·

London Irish’s new owners aim to revive the club after it went into administration in 2023, with a possible return to professional rugby as early as next season. Gamechanger Investments has bought the club’s name, brand and intellectual property, and says it wants to rebuild a sustainable team that can compete again.

Chief executive Jamie Balls said the club would seek entry to the Championship, English rugby’s second tier, at the earliest opportunity, though a place next season is not assured. The new owners are also exploring a home ground, including the former Hazelwood training site in Surrey, and plan to restore the women’s team with the ambition of reaching Premiership Women’s Rugby.

In short

  • London Irish could return to professional rugby next season.
  • The club is targeting the Championship as its starting point.
  • A ground and sustainable finances remain key challenges.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

A return could restore a valued club with deep roots in London and give former supporters and local communities a team to rally behind. If the owners can secure a suitable ground, build finances carefully and meet the Championship’s requirements, a staged revival could benefit players and broaden the game’s reach, including through a women’s team.

The case against

A rapid return could risk repeating the financial problems that led to the club’s collapse if ambition outpaces reliable funding, facilities and a sustainable business plan. Championship entry is not assured, and rebuilding both men’s and women’s teams would require substantial resources; supporters and the league may reasonably prefer proof of long-term stability before welcoming the club back.
