Brazilian bricklayer travels 1,300 miles to meet AI-generated persona

Daily Mail ·

Edimar Rocha Martins, a 49-year-old bricklayer grieving his mother’s death, travelled across Brazil to meet a woman he believed had offered him love and a fresh start. He discovered on arrival that the online persona, known as Jéssica Oliveira or Jessica Fazendeira, was AI-generated, leaving him stranded and short of money.

Martins travelled by bus for more than 36 hours from Imperatriz to Belo Horizonte, about 1,300 miles away by road, after spending his salary on the journey. The woman’s videos depicted rural life and attracted more than 300,000 followers; she had promised him a place on her farm and financial support. Belo Horizonte’s migrant support service provided food, a shower, scam advice and a bus ticket, and the case was reported as the third similar incident in the city in under six months.

AI-generated personas are online characters created with artificial intelligence, sometimes using made-up images, videos and personal details. They can attract large audiences on social media, where viewers may not know whether a person shown is real.

People who follow such accounts may form relationships with them through messages and videos. This can make it difficult to tell who is behind an account or whether promises of companionship, work or financial help are genuine.

The case raises questions about how people can check online identities before making costly decisions. It also points to the support services available to people who arrive in a city after losing money or needing help.
