California lorry driver jailed for leaking colleagues’ details in £2.3m benefits fraud
David Ray, a 68-year-old California trucker, was sentenced to one year in prison after giving his online girlfriend and her accomplice personal details of 375 colleagues. They used the information to make fraudulent unemployment claims, highlighting how the pandemic-era system was exploited and how Ray’s colleagues were put at risk.
Court documents say Ray met Aryanah Davison on a sugar baby website in 2019 and borrowed money to support her expensive lifestyle, including buying her a luxury SUV. Davison and Ardavan Alamoutinia filed about 500 claims across 27 states, obtaining nearly $2.9 million; Ray received about $144,400. He pleaded guilty in 2023, while Alamoutinia was sentenced to 10 years and Davison is awaiting sentencing.
