Lorde slams new AI-generated Spotify feature: “We don’t want this”
Lorde has criticised Spotify’s AI-generated ‘About the Song’ feature after it produced an incorrect description of her song ‘Current Affairs’. She argued that the error, and the practice of assigning an AI-generated meaning to music, could restrict listeners’ own interpretations, and called for artists to be able to opt out.
The feature said ‘Current Affairs’ accompanied a 2025 Ultrasound World Tour performance involving water and undressing, but Lorde said the song used was actually ‘GRWM’. Spotify launched the beta feature in February, using summaries drawn from third-party online sources; it said it corrected the mistake quickly and that accuracy matters. The dispute comes as Spotify plans a ‘Verified by Spotify’ badge for authenticated artists while maintaining a comparatively permissive approach to AI-generated music.
