Los Tigres del Norte to Headline Voto Latino’s Rally in Texas Ahead of Midterm Elections

Rolling Stone ·

Los Tigres del Norte will headline Voto Latino’s “Ready. Go. Vote.” rally in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley on 25 October, alongside several Democratic candidates. The event aims to encourage Latino voters to participate in the midterm elections, with the region seen as important to contests for governor, the US Senate and the House of Representatives.

Voto Latino says it has directly registered nearly 416,000 voters and plans to contact and turn out more than 800,000. The organisation estimates that the Valley has 665,575 eligible Latino voters, and says 316,000 did not vote in 2024. Los Tigres del Norte have a long history of political music, including performing at Kamala Harris and Tim Walz’s final rally in 2024.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Supporters can argue that a concert rally is a legitimate way to reach voters who may feel overlooked and to encourage participation among eligible people who did not vote recently. In a closely contested region, raising turnout can help ensure election results reflect the views of more residents, while the band’s political music may make civic engagement feel accessible.

The case against

Critics can argue that a rally featuring Democratic candidates and a politically associated band may blur nonpartisan voter engagement with partisan campaigning. They may also question whether celebrity-led mobilisation and turnout targets build lasting civic participation, or risk making voters feel they are being targeted for electoral advantage.
