Loughnane, 20, becomes youngest champion jockey since 1923
Billy Loughnane, aged 20, was crowned Britain’s champion jockey at Ascot, becoming the youngest holder of the title since Charlie Elliott in 1923. His achievement highlights a rapid rise through the sport: just four years after his first ride, he has won major races and beaten five-time champion Oisin Murphy to the championship.
Loughnane has recorded more than 220 wins this year, including his first Classic, the 2,000 Guineas, and four other Group One victories. He is now considering a challenge to Sir Gordon Richards’ record of 269 Flat wins in a calendar year and may seek another championship in 2027; Murphy praised his discipline and work ethic. William Buick also had a notable day at Ascot, winning two major races and completing a 206/1 treble.
