Experimental musician L'Rain, the project of Taja Cheek, has released "borderline", a new single from her forthcoming album fata morgana. The release continues the rollout of the record, following last month's well-received lead single "soulless cycle", and signals a busy promotional run ahead of the album's arrival.

Where "soulless cycle" was praised for its chaotic energy, "borderline" is described as gentle and dreamy before building into a buzzy climax. The track is accompanied by a music video directed by Mackai Sharp, featuring appearances from Tasha, Arooj Aftab, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Rena Anakwe and E. Jane, along with footage of an ice block being broken apart with a chisel and chainsaw. The album fata morgana is due out on 14 August via Mexican Summer, and Cheek also briefly placed a track titled "July 5" on streaming for a single day on 4 July.
