Lucy Dacus – “Clay Pigeons” (Blaze Foley Cover)

Stereogum · 4 hours ago

Lucy Dacus has released a cover of Blaze Foley's "Clay Pigeons" for the upcoming tribute album Sittin' With Blaze, due out on Friday via Lost Art Records. The record honours Foley, a Texan outlaw country songwriter who was shot dead in 1989 aged 39 and whose reputation has grown posthumously through tributes such as Lucinda Williams' "Drunken Angel" and Ethan Hawke's 2018 biopic Blaze.

Dacus' stripped-back, acoustic rendition joins previous versions of the well-travelled song by artists including John Prine and Michael Cera, and sits alongside other contributions to the compilation from Phosphorescent, John Moreland and Williams herself. In a press release, Dacus said a friend introduced her to the track around six years ago and that she considers it one of the best songs ever written, adding that she hopes listeners will seek out Foley's original after hearing her version.
