Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has faced unexpected backlash from fellow conservative supporters over a welfare-to-work campaign advertisement featuring a young white man lounging on a sofa. The ad, released as part of her reelection campaign, depicts a character named Brad playing video games whilst living on welfare, and culminates with him eventually getting a job after Sanders introduced her new welfare-to-work policy requiring able-bodied recipients to work, study or volunteer.

Conservative figures including Jack Posobiec and Matt Walsh criticised the advert as "anti-white," claiming it unfairly targeted white men and attacked the Republican Party's core voting base. However, the irony of this backlash is underscored by data from Arkansas's Department of Human Services, which reveals that over 60 per cent of the state's roughly 218,000 Medicaid expansion enrollees are white, whilst only 18 per cent are Black. Sanders defended her advertisement on social media, dismissing critics and reiterating her position that able-bodied welfare recipients should be required to work or contribute to society.
