Magic: The Gathering designer Doug Beyer says he expected the 2012 card Vengeful Pharaoh to become more popular, because its rules evoke a complete mummy-horror narrative. The card punishes attackers while it is in the graveyard, then returns to the top of its owner’s deck, effectively depicting an awakened curse; its relative obscurity highlights the gap between strong thematic design and competitive usefulness.
Vengeful Pharaoh costs five mana and is a 5/4 black Zombie with deathtouch, but its key ability destroys an attacking creature after its owner takes combat damage and places the Pharaoh atop their library. That loop often forces its owner to draw and recast the card, making it awkward without milling or sacrifice synergies; it appears in only 0.14% of 4.86 million Commander decks recorded by EDHREC, mainly in zombie or self-mill strategies. Beyer said it has only been printed in Magic 2012, but suggested it could eventually return.
