Magic: The Gathering Star Trek Shakes Up Commander With 2 Bold New Mechanics
Developing story first seen 2 hours ago
The new detail is that Magic: The Gathering’s Star Trek Commander decks will introduce two abilities that could suit future sets as well as this crossover. Battlefront rewards players for attacking multiple opponents, while Seek Out triggers when they draw their second card in a turn.
Worf, Defiant Commander uses Battlefront to exile cards from the top of the player’s library and let them play those cards until their next turn. Jean-Luc Picard, Luminary uses Seek Out to add counters, and also draws a card when a historic permanent with mana value three or more enters play. The other decks are led by the Borg Queen and Spock; all four are scheduled for release on 13 November.

Magic: The Gathering is a card game in which players build decks and use them to compete. Commander is a popular format where each player brings a 100-card deck led by a special character card, and games often involve several players at once.
The Star Trek decks bring characters from the science-fiction series into the game. Their leaders include Worf, Jean-Luc Picard, the Borg Queen and Spock. Two new abilities are designed around attacking different opponents and drawing extra cards, actions that can shape how a Commander game unfolds.
The decks are due out on 13 November. Their new abilities may also offer ways to design cards for later Magic sets, beyond this Star Trek release.
